Location: U-District, Seattle, WA Size: 66,474 SF
Slated to open in October of 2018, this project represents a new 7-story, 66,474 SF office building located in Seattle's U-District. neighborhood. Retail and community spaces will take up the ground level, including a new WSECU branch, and the building will have 3 levels of below grade parking. One of the core priorities of the development was to integrate it with the surrounding neighborhood, with a particular focus on activating the streetscape with community-oriented uses. Another driving goal of the project was to create a distinctive character for WSECU’s new branch. “We wanted to create a building that feels a part of its neighborhood and that also provides a signature identity for WSECU,” stated principal-in-charge Brian Collins-Friedrichs.
Significant attention was paid to activating the ground-plane and streetscape with community-oriented uses, pedestrian scaled building elements, and engaging public environments. A driving goal was to balance responsiveness to the neighborhood with a distinctive identity for WSECU. The building’s recessed corner “lantern” design element is destined to be a new neighborhood icon while the building’s façade and openness will harken back to the U-District’s academic and community-minded roots. “When it comes to commercial buildings like this…it’s important to consider a development in its specific context. We wanted to create an environment that was an 18-hour experience; it’s important to create a vibrancy at ground-plane. WSECU saw that vision as well,” said Kyle Gaffney, design principal.
