Single-Family Residential

Designed for a couple who are equal parts technology and nature, digital and analog, city and country, this single-family residence is a study in balance-harmonies and contrasts woven into a seamless whole. Informed by their dual sensibilities (and one dog), it draws from the rhythms of the site, the permanence of durable materials, and the fluidity of sustainable design.

Located on a long, narrow lot on the shoreline of Lake Whatcom in northwest Washington state, view affordability is at a premium, and the primary focus — the connection to the water — informs the overall linear geometries of the house.

Exterior materials—smooth-formed concrete, corten steel, shou sugi ban wood siding, and standing seam metal panels—are selected for their durability, simplicity, and cohesive integration, contributing to a design that balances rigor with visual richness.

Inside, a study in contrast unfolds—rough meets polished, raw meets refined. Unfinished concrete pairs with rich walnut accents, while dark hardwood floors complement plywood walls, creating a dynamic interplay of texture and tone.
