At Roses Lake, the boundary of the house changes with the season. Oversized sliding barn doors open an indoor outdoor room across the full width of the building, allowing daily life to expand toward the lake or draw back into shelter as weather and routines shift. The architecture takes its cues from the agricultural buildings of Eastern Washington, with elongated gabled volumes, deep overhangs, timber, and metal responding to the particular conditions of the site. Familiar rural forms are not treated as a style to reproduce. Their scale and arrangement are reconsidered around how this family lives, the regional climate, and the expansive lake landscape.

Roses Lake Residence is organized as a series of barn-like gabled volumes, with standing-seam metal roofs, dark-stained wood siding, and a central corrugated-metal pavilion.
The central pavilion opens through oversized sliding barn doors, establishing a direct spatial axis from the arrival court through the house to Roses Lake and the agricultural landscape beyond.
Set within Eastern Washington’s orchard landscape, the residence draws its scale, roof geometry, and utilitarian material palette from the region’s agricultural buildings.
The indoor-outdoor room is conceived as a contemporary agricultural pavilion, with exposed timber rafters, wood plank walls, integrated cooking and dining functions, and broad openings toward the lake.
A steel fireplace and integrated wood storage form a substantial hearth.
Exposed timber roof framing, plank cladding, steel, and utilitarian fixtures give the indoor-outdoor room a deliberately direct expression of structure and material.
With the barn doors fully open, the pavilion frames Roses Lake and the orchards beyond, extending dining and gathering space onto the waterside terrace.
Corrugated metal cladding, expressed fasteners, deep-set glazing, and folded metal trim make the tectonic assembly legible.
An extended overhead track carries the doors free of the building edge, celebrating the entry.
