Microsoft Start-Up Labs
Microsoft Startup Labs sits inside one of the world’s largest technology companies, but it was built for a team meant to behave differently. SkB Architects used the bi level Cambridge workplace to give that smaller group a degree of autonomy without separating it from Microsoft. Individual work settings make room for concentration, while shared spaces give unfinished ideas somewhere to be discussed, tested, and changed. Abundant natural light keeps those settings connected across the workplace rather than dividing experimentation into designated creative zones. The architecture does not need to advertise innovation. It gives an experimental team the conditions to work differently inside a much larger organization.

The Microsoft Startup Labs workplace uses a broad social stair to place movement, informal meetings and communal activity within the same field of view. Circulation becomes useful workplace infrastructure, increasing the likelihood of brief encounters without requiring another scheduled meeting.
A glazed meeting room occupies the upper level of the Microsoft Startup Labs office, maintaining visual connection with the activity below while providing an enclosed setting for focused discussion. Its position makes collaboration visible within the architecture rather than concealing it behind a conventional corridor of meeting rooms.
Built in seating turns an otherwise residual edge of the workplace into a credible place to stop, read, wait or have a short conversation.
The café gives the Microsoft Startup Labs office a shared destination outside the immediate work setting. Simple tables, daylight and direct access to refreshments support a range of everyday uses, from lunch and individual work to informal team conversations.
Daylight, planting and informal seating are concentrated along a principal circulation route, giving employees reasons to occupy the space rather than simply pass through it. The arrangement reflects an important workplace planning principle: informal interaction is more likely where people already move during the working day.
The Microsoft Startup Labs office combines enclosed meeting space with transparent boundaries and direct visual connection to the wider workplace. Acoustic separation is provided where it is useful, while the room remains part of the shared spatial environment rather than becoming an isolated corporate meeting suite.
